Clinical rotation program for senior medical students
The goal of this elective in global health is to offer students the opportunity to learn about health, healing, and wellness from a transcultural perspective by living and working in another country. Students will have the opportunity to experience a different context, generally with fewer technical and medical resources than they are accustomed to. They will observe a different way of organizing healthcare to achieve positive health outcomes for the population, as is the case in Costa Rica. Resources that are taken for granted in developed countries like the United States, Canada, and Europe may be scarce here. Students will have the opportunity to serve the community and broaden their perspective on future medical practice.

This rotation is designed to allow students to participate in the activities of the healthcare team at all levels of care within the Costa Rican Health System (Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social – CCSS). At the first level, the emphasis is on preventive services, including immunizations, maternal and child health services, prenatal care, child growth and development, nutrition, community education, sanitation and the environment, as well as the management of chronic diseases. At the third level, experiences vary according to the specialty.
In industrialized countries, the Spanish-speaking and migrant populations, in general, represent a significant number of people to whom healthcare professionals must provide appropriate care. Promoting competency-based medical education involves preparing professionals to face the reality of working with, understanding, and communicating with these population groups. This rotation is competency-based, exposing students to working with Hispanic populations and learning about and accepting cultural differences as a fundamental scientific and ethical principle of medical practice.
