Clinical shadowing program for junior medical students + medical Spanish component + tropical medicine + global health overview

This experience lasts 4 to 6 weeks and is only available between July and November each year. Groups of up to 9 students are accepted. Individual students must join pre-arranged groups. Students can choose their dates within the aforementioned period. Intermediate and advanced Spanish students are welcome, as the goal is to practice and refine acquired language skills. Beginner Spanish students can opt for program P010A on this portal.

The objective of this program is to offer first-, second, and third-year medical students the opportunity to learn about health and healing from a more global perspective by living and working in another country. Students will have the opportunity to learn medical Spanish and directly observe clinical practice, experiencing a different culture that typically has fewer technical and medical resources than they are accustomed to. They will be able to observe a different way of organizing healthcare to achieve good health outcomes for the population, such as the Costa Rican healthcare system.

This immersive cultural experience offers two compelling advantages: an introduction to tropical medicine, with an emphasis on six key diseases such as dengue and malaria; and a critical analysis of health systems from a global perspective.

Below, you can view the program brochure developed for the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School at Rutgers University, with whom we have successfully delivered the program for over three consecutive years. Students can customize this program individually, or groups can design their own 4- or 6-week schedule in collaboration with the IHCAI Institute.
